Founded by a law enforcement officer, Blacktop Bootcamp began in 2011 as an advanced teen driving education company. Using instructors from law enforcement and high-performance driving backgrounds, Blacktop Bootcamp taught teen and adult drivers life-saving driving skills. Part of that training included learning emergency swerve to avoid and emergency braking maneuvers - similar to what is taught to first responders. In Emergency Vehicle Operations training for police, fire, and military these exercises often utilize a light system to accomplish this. Normally these lights require an instructor to manually activate them. In an effort to maximize student to instructor ratios, Blacktop Bootcamp developed a way to automate these lights.
Utilizing his background in Information Technology, CEO Christopher Ihara developed the Blacktop Bootcamp light system into the industry's most technologically advanced driver training system. The end result was named the Automated Traffic Scenario Simulator (ATSS).
